Bone and Joint Health 101 – Part 2

By Gloria Gilbère, N.D., D.A. Hom., Ph.D.

Nature’s Help for Pain and Inflammation

There are many “safe” options that are overlooked in the search for non-drug solutions. The following are, in my professional experience, some of the most effective alternatives to drug therapy:

Cherry Juiceis an ancient remedy for gout, arthritis and inflammatory disorders, it aids in the breakdown of uric acid crystals that deposit in joints, tendons, kidneys and connective tissue, where it causes inflammation, pain and damage.

Gingerstimulates circulation, reduces spasms, cramps and specifically contains multiple constituents that inhibit COX-2 inflammation.

Turmeric, also known as Curcumin, is the major ingredient in curry powder. It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine as a potent anti-inflammatory. It is used in integrative medicine for its natural antibiotic properties and the ability to relieve intestinal gas by lowering the number of gas-forming bacteria. According to Dr. Ralph Golan, author of Optimal Wellness, it may be comparable to that of pharmaceutical medications for inflammation, without the side-effects. Turmeric also maximizes the body’s ability to maintain and enhance joint and connective tissue health.

Acerola Cherrycontains high amounts of naturally occurring Vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a powerful antioxidant. Vitamin C is needed to make collagen – providing the formation of new connective tissue that strengthens parts of the body, such as muscles, joints and blood vessels.

Feverfewrelieves arthritis pain and muscle tension and has been used for centuries in Greek medicine for inflammation. Feverfew contains a range of compounds known as sesquiterpene lactones – included in these are over 85% of a compound called parthenolide, which prevents excessive clumping of platelets and inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators.

Valerianis a natural muscle relaxer by its ability to sedate the central nervous system. It is believed Valerian works by regulating the receptors in the brain known as Gaba-A receptors – binding to the receptors to exert a sedating action.

Lemon Powder is an excellent source of natural antioxidants, bioflavanoids and enzymes in a “ready-to-use” form.

White Willow Barkcontains naturally occurring high amounts of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. This is nature’s aspirin, and has been used for centuries for pain and inflammation. The anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties of white willow are contained in glycoside calicin, from which the body can “spill off” salicylic acid. The analgesic actions of willow are typically slower than standard aspirin products; however, outlast standard analgesics. It is especially used for arthritis, bursitis, fever, headache, tension and rheumatoid arthritis.
